Tell us a little about yourself and your background?

I am an engineer by profession and I work for Indian Railways. I suffer from an incurable passion to write and that makes me a writer too.

What were you like at school?

At school, I was an extremely shy person and I rarely spoke to anyone. Reading, studying and writing were my favorite pass time. I had very few friends and was basically a loner.

Were you good at English?

Yeah, I loved all languages and my teachers felt that I was good at English as well as Hindi.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?

I did not begin with any ambitions when I started writing. I write for the love of it and shall continue to do so. Anything else is coincidental.

Which writers inspire you?

My favorite author is Erich Segal. As such I love any good book.

 So, what have you written?

I have written ten books by now.
1. SOUL SEEKERS- A novel by LiFi Publications
2. Layers of flickering lights – A poetry collection by Authorspress India.
3. Silhouette of Reflections – A poetry collection by YS Books International.
4. Hues of Love – A poetry collection by Writers Empire.
5. Rishtey Mohabbat ke – A short story collection in Hindi by Omji Publishers.
6. Treacherous Lady – A novella by Pageturn Publishers.
7. Tales from Sundervan – A short story collection for children by Sahni Publications.
8. Chanda – A picture book for children by Room to Read.
9. Pankhudiyan – A short story collection for children by Sadhna Publications.
10.Five tales – A short story collection for children by Naman Publications.
I also write four liners regularly on my fb page

Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?

Three of my books were released recently – A novel Soul Seekers by LiFi Publications, a short story collection Rishtey Mohabbat ke by Omji Publishers and a poetry collection Layers of Flickering Lights by Authorspress. Generally, all the characters of my books till now have been strong women who stand up for their cause.Cover_Flickering Lights FINALL Cover final changed

What are you working on at the minute?

Right now, I am awaiting the release of my novel ‘Can I have this chance’ by Authorspress Publications.

What’s it about?

‘Can I have this chance’ is a story about courage, justice, love, sacrifices, a quest for the truth, and crucial choices, all revolving around the life of a simple woman from India, but with a fire in her eyes to prove herself

Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?

Vidya Balan.

How much research do you do?

For some of the novels (and stories) I am only quite familiar since I am a good observer and an avid reader. However, for others, I have to go into deep research mode and then I leave no stone unturned.

Have you written any other novels in collaboration with other writers?

No.

When did you decide to become a writer?

Ha, ha, ha….not yet decided.

Why do you write?

It is a passion – something which gives me a deep satisfaction, which makes me feel good and which provides me a platform to express my views.

What made you decide to sit down and actually start something?

I used to narrate a new story everyday to my daughter. My husband just asked me to write some story and send it across for publishing and I did just that. When it was not only published, but liked by people, I got a stimulus to write more and more.

Do you write full-time or part-time?

I write part-time.

Do you have a special time to write or how is your day structured?

Nothing is structured, since writing is based upon moods.

Do you write every day, 5 days a week or as and when?

As and when I can squeeze in a little time.

Do you aim for a set amount of words/pages per day?

No such aims. Quality is the main aim. Everything should make sense, it should be logical and the characters should shape up properly.

Do you write on a typewriter, computer, dictate or longhand?

I type straightaway into a computer.

What is the hardest thing about writing?

To make a story interesting by not resorting to cheap techniques.

What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?

Nothing. The whole novel was completed in two months straight.

Do you ever get writer’s Block?

Yes, sometimes I do get. But that is more for completing a pending story – not for general writing. At such times, I begin writing something else and then switch over to the one I had left half completed after that.

For your own reading, do you prefer ebooks or traditional paper/hard back books?

Traditional paper/hard bound books.

Do you proofread/edit all your own books or do you get someone to do that for you?
Recieving award from Dadlani

Receiving award from Vishal Dadlani

First I do my own editing three four times and after that I have a few friends such as Raksha Hegde and Meenal Bhatnagar who help me in editing. And then, I have my own in-house editor – my daughter who is a great critic as well as writer herself at a raw age of fifteen.

How are you publishing this book and why?

I have always gone for traditional publishing. When a traditional publisher chooses your manuscript and decides to publish it, it is in itself a proof that you have written well.

How do you market your books?

Generally, my publishers have taken care of marketing till now. Of Course, I assist them by being available whenever required.

How do you relax?

Writing is my favorite relaxation. Besides this, I also resort to yoga and meditation.

Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?

Ruskin Bond.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Write what you feel and not what market wants if you want to carve your own space. Don’t be upset by rejections. They are a part and parcel of life. Even G.B Shaw was rejected.
