Mariam born in Herat a harami as they call her is married to Rasheed a brute more than double her age. Who turns evil, harassing after she has a series of miscarriages. The another protagonist of this story Laila raised by intellectual parents and protecting friend Tariq. Her life ruins after stray inexorable rocket kills her family and her boyfriend becomes a refugee in Pakistan who also gets killed.
She is rescued by Mariam and her husband Rasheed. Later a friendship develops between Mariam and Laila more like a mother and daughter relationship. The emotions in the story are well structured tears flow down for the deaths of the loving people, feel raged over Rasheed’s brutality, even blush on Laila and Tariq’s intimacy. As the story moves on its not just sympathy you will respect, care and appreciate them for their courage.
The story also describes how the beautiful country was destroyed by the soviets then overtook by the Taliban and rules made by them making women prisoners in their house and their life more worse. It also narrates the Titanic fever among the Afghanis and Laila saying ‘Everybody wants Jack to save them. Jack is dead. Jack is not coming back’.
Hosseini has this boon of writing stories in 3 dimensional style , he gives the story a realistic touch. He cares for his every character he gives them depth as they require. This book accomplishes in making you want to read more and even gives knowledge about the life of people in Afghanistan. This book is a must read to all those book lovers.
